The vacuum cleaner is one of the most essential cleaning tools used today and can be found in practically all homes. It’s been over a hundred years since James Spangler and the Hoover Company begun commercially selling its first model vacuum cleaner. At the time, there were no optional attachments to the vacuum cleaner. It was a straightforward floor based carpet cleaner. Today, there are numerous vacuum attachments that have made this piece of equipment very versatile and as a result, the most common piece of electric cleaning equipment around.
Manufacturers often provide several vacuum cleaner attachments to the base unit. Other attachments are available at an extra cost, but the the standard attachment kits that come with most vacuums already include the most essential accessories. These standard attachments commonly include a hose extension wand, an upholstery brush, and a crevice hose.
The hose extension attachment is a standard accessory that extends the length of the hose for convenience when trying to reach farther distances or reach tight spaces. The crevice hose is similar in function to the extender wand but it tapers off at the edge to allow you to reach even tighter spaces including crevices and holes. The tapering crevice hose also provides a stronger suction pressure because of its smaller opening. The upholstery brush comes in various models and designs. The more common of which is a circular brush attached to the end of the hose. The brush is great for loosening material left in upholstered furniture or in carpets. The brushing and air pressure provides a double action in getting rid of crumbs and the like.
Another popular vacuum cleaner attachment is the vertical blinds cleaner. The attachment has holes on both sides of the hose to vacuum between blinds. The attachment used to clean ceiling fans is very useful. Unlike the extension wand, this attachment is bent and allowing you to reach and vacuum the topside of the ceiling fan blades. Each attachment that manufacturers promote is designed with a specific purpose in mind. You’ll find that most hoses are a standard size, thus most vacuum accessories will likely fit a standard hose. Still, there are some attachments that are specific to certain vacuum cleaner models. For instance, Dyson vacuum attachments usually won’t fit a Kirby and Canister vacuum attachments won’t work with a lot of uprights; therefore it is best to get the same brand attachment as your cleaner.
There are many popular brands of vacuum cleaners that offer a variety of models and accessories, including attachments. When purchasing a vacuum cleaner, make sure that the manufacturer has a service center near your location in case parts and servicing is required.
